University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) 2026 cut-off marks set Medicine and Surgery at 270, Pharmacy at 260, Dentistry at 260, Law at 250, Engineering at 230 to 240, and most arts and social science courses at 200 JAMB. These are the working cut-offs used by UNN’s admission committee for the 2026 cycle. The admission decision uses a blended aggregate of JAMB and Post-UTME, with O Level grades weighed as a tie-breaker.
Last updated: May 2026 UNN is Nigeria’s first indigenous university and remains a competitive admission destination, especially for candidates from the South-East. How UNN cut-offs have moved year on year
UNN’s institutional cut-off has held at 200 for general entry, but course-level working cut-offs have crept upward in the competitive programmes. Medicine sat at 260 in 2022 and has been at 270 for the last two cycles. Pharmacy moved from 250 to 260. Law has held at 250 since 2021, with Post-UTME aggregate increasingly deciding admission.
Computer Science was 220 four years ago and now sits at 235. Engineering branches have nudged from 215-225 to 220-240 over the same period, with Electronic and Computer Engineering at the top of the band. Accountancy and Mass Communication have also moved up.
The trend reflects the rising South-East applicant pool plus the broader national interest in UNN’s flagship programmes. A candidate with 240 JAMB had real Medicine options four years ago; today, 240 is below the working floor and the candidate should target a Change of Course at the same school or look at state and private alternatives.
Arts, pure Sciences and Education have largely held at 200 to 210, providing accessible options for candidates with mid-range JAMB scores who still want a UNN degree.
How UNN calculates the admission aggregate
UNN uses a blended aggregate of JAMB and Post-UTME, with the exact ratio confirmed each cycle on the admission portal. Recent cycles have used roughly 50% JAMB plus 50% Post-UTME, scaling JAMB by dividing by 8 (so a score of 280 becomes 35 out of 50) and Post-UTME by halving (60% becomes 30 out of 50).
Worked example: a candidate scores 270 JAMB (33.75 scaled) and 65% Post-UTME (32.5 scaled). Aggregate is 66.25. A second candidate scores 250 JAMB (31.25 scaled) and 78% Post-UTME (39 scaled). Aggregate is 70.25. The second candidate ranks higher despite the lower JAMB.
O Level grades are not formally weighted in the aggregate but are used at the verification stage and as a tie-breaker. Strong O Level grades (multiple A1 and B2) lift you in tight finishes. Weak O Level grades, even meeting the credit threshold, can cost you a slot.
The 45-35-20 quota split applies on top of the aggregate ranking. The merit quota (45%) is open nationally. The catchment quota (35%) favours Enugu and surrounding South-East states (Anambra, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo). The ELDS quota (20%) goes to candidates from JAMB-designated educationally-less-developed states.
What happens if you score below the cut-off
Three options open. First, Change of Course on JAMB (₦2,500) to a programme where your score meets the working cut-off. A Medicine aspirant with 250 can switch to Medical Laboratory Science, Anatomy, Physiology, or Nursing Sciences at UNN.
Second, Change of Institution to a school with lower cut-offs. State universities (Enugu State, Imo State, Ebonyi State, Abia State) and many private schools have cut-offs 20 to 50 marks below UNN for the same course.
Third, the UNN supplementary list picks up candidates with strong Post-UTME aggregates who narrowly missed the merit cut-off. Supplementary offers come out in October or November.
The polytechnic ND route is also legitimate. Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Federal Polytechnic Oko, Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, and others offer ND programmes that lead to a degree at UNN through Direct Entry. Many UNN graduates took this on-ramp.
Nsukka vs Enugu Campus: what changes about admission
UNN’s College of Medicine is hosted at the Enugu Campus, near UNTH (University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital). The other faculties are at the main Nsukka campus. Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing candidates spend pre-clinical years (100 to 300 level) at Nsukka before moving to the Enugu Campus for clinical training. The campus split affects daily life in real ways.
Cost of living differs slightly between the two. Nsukka is a smaller university town with lower rent and a quieter atmosphere. Enugu Campus sits in a bigger city, with higher rent but more conveniences. Medical students plan accommodation around the move from Nsukka to Enugu in 400 level.
For admission purposes, your campus depends on the course you applied for. Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing students are technically Enugu Campus candidates throughout their degree even though they start at Nsukka. Other faculties (Engineering, Sciences, Arts, Social Sciences, Education, Agriculture) are Nsukka throughout.
The cut-offs are set centrally by UNN’s admission committee, not separately by campus. The figures in the tables above apply regardless of which campus hosts the course. The catchment quota, the merit quota, and the ELDS quota apply uniformly.
Frequently asked questions
Has UNN officially released its 2026 cut-offs?
UNN releases department-by-department cut-offs on its admission portal after the JAMB Policy Meeting, usually in June or July. The figures shown here are the working bands from the 2026 admission cycle drawn from the admission committee’s preliminary parameters. Confirm on the official UNN admission portal before paying Post-UTME.
How does UNN compare with UI or UNILAG for Medicine?
UNN Medicine works at 270; UI at 280; UNILAG at 280. The 10-mark gap reflects the relative competitive intensity of the South-East applicant pool versus the South-West concentration at UI and UNILAG. All three are top-tier and produce MDCN-licensed doctors. UNN’s College of Medicine has trained doctors for the South-East for over five decades.
What is the difference between Nsukka and Enugu campuses for cut-offs?
The College of Medicine at the Enugu Campus (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science) has the higher cut-offs. The Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology at Enugu has similar high cut-offs for clinical-track programmes. The Nsukka main campus has most other faculties, with cut-offs in the 200 to 240 band depending on course. Your campus depends on the course you applied for; confirm on your admission letter.
Is UNN strict on catchment for South-East candidates?
UNN applies the JAMB-mandated 45-35-20 split. Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo are the core catchment states. Candidates from these states compete for the 35% catchment pool, with a slightly lower aggregate threshold than the merit pool. ELDS quota (20%) covers JAMB-designated educationally-less-developed states. The merit quota (45%) is open nationally.
If I scored 250 in UNN Engineering, am I in?
250 puts you above the working cut-off for most UNN Engineering branches (Mechanical 235, Civil 230). You qualify for Post-UTME. Your admission then depends on the aggregate; a 75% Post-UTME would put you in strong contention. For the most competitive branch (Electronic Engineering at 240), 250 sits 10 marks above the floor, which is comfortable.
Are UNN supplementary admissions reliable?
The supplementary list is a real second chance and admits candidates each cycle. Supplementary candidates are usually those who narrowly missed the merit cut-off (within 10 to 20 marks) and have strong Post-UTME aggregates. The supplementary list comes out in October or November. You do not apply separately; UNN decides based on the aggregate ranking after the merit and catchment rounds have filled.
