The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) admits via JAMB UTME plus Post-UTME screening, with a minimum JAMB score of 200 for most courses. Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Law and Nursing typically ask for 250 or higher, with the working floor for Medicine at UNN sitting around 270 in recent admission cycles. UNN admits roughly 8,000 fresh students each year across its three campuses, from an applicant pool above 70,000.
Last updated: May 2026 UNN is Nigeria’s first indigenous university, founded in 1960. The main campus sits in Nsukka, Enugu State. The College of Medicine is in Enugu Campus, and the College of Education is at the Enugu Campus too. UNN runs 15 faculties plus the College of Medicine. The school has a strong tradition in Veterinary Medicine (one of the oldest such faculties in West Africa), Engineering, and the Health Sciences. This guide walks through what you need at every stage of the UNN admission process.
UNN draws heavily from the South-East and South-South catchment, but its merit quota is open to candidates nationally. The campus is sprawling and largely residential for the early years of study.
Why UNN
UNN was the first university established by Nigerians for Nigerians, modelled originally on American land-grant universities. That founding ethos still shapes the school: it remains heavy on the practical, applied side of the disciplines, with strong Engineering, Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, and Pharmacy programmes. The College of Medicine at Enugu Campus has trained doctors for the South-East and South-South for over five decades.
UNN’s Faculty of Engineering is among the larger engineering schools in Nigeria, with departments in Electronic, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Petroleum, and Metallurgical Engineering. The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences is well regarded, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is one of only a handful in West Africa.
The Nsukka campus is set in the highlands of Enugu State, with cooler weather than most of Nigeria. Student halls of residence, the lecture halls, the library, the sports complex, and the student union centre are all on the main campus. The cost of living is lower than at the Lagos federal schools, which keeps the total cost of education at UNN among the most affordable in the top tier.

Admission requirements
O Level requirements. UNN requires five credits at C6 or above in not more than two sittings of WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB. The five must include English Language, Mathematics, and the three subjects relevant to your course. For Medicine, those three are Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. For Law, Literature in English, Government, and one other arts subject. UNN is strict on the credit grade and on Mathematics for science courses.
A D7 in any of the five core subjects disqualifies the candidate from the relevant course. The candidate’s option then is either to retake the subject (WAEC GCE or NECO) or to switch to a course where the failed subject is not required.
JAMB UTME requirements. UNN’s published minimum is 200 for most courses, raised to 250 for Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing and Law. The working cut-offs sit 20 to 40 marks above the published figures for the headline competitive courses. Aim well above the floor.
Direct Entry. UNN accepts A Level passes, IJMB, JUPEB, and HND with at least Upper Credit into the second year of the degree. NCE holders apply for relevant Education programmes. DE candidates register with JAMB on the Direct Entry form (₦5,700) and sit a UNN DE screening before the admission is uploaded to CAPS. DE slots are limited; plan UTME as the primary route.

Post-UTME process
UNN Post-UTME is a CBT screening on the same four UTME subjects you registered with. The fee is around ₦2,500, paid through the UNN portal. Screening dates are assigned after registration closes, with the bulk of candidates writing in July or August.
The aggregate blends JAMB and Post-UTME, with O Level used as a tie-breaker. The blend has been around 50/50 in recent cycles. Candidates with strong Post-UTME scores can offset moderate JAMB results, but the blend rewards consistency rather than rescuing a weak JAMB score with an exceptional screening result.
On screening day, bring the printed JAMB result slip, the UNN e-slip, a passport-style photograph, and a valid ID. UNN does not allow phones or smart watches in the hall. The result is published on the UNN portal within two to three weeks of the last screening date.
For preparation, drill the JAMB syllabus a second time with tighter timing. Past Post-UTME questions from UNN are available at the campus bookshop and on CBT practice apps; sit at least four full mocks in the fortnight before the screening date.
Tuition, accommodation and what it costs in 2026
UNN is a federal university, so tuition is officially free. Each fresh student pays acceptance fee, development levy, faculty levies, ID, examination and library fees. Total first-year obligation in 2025 ran between ₦60,000 and ₦150,000 for most faculties, rising to ₦200,000 to ₦300,000 for the College of Medicine where laboratory and clinical fees apply.
UNN is largely residential for the first year. Halls of residence at Nsukka include Alvan Ikoku Hall, Mbanefo Hall, and Eyo Ita Hall for males; Bello Hall and Mary Slessor Hall for females. On-campus hostel costs around ₦10,000 to ₦20,000 per session, allocated by ballot.
Off-campus housing in Nsukka town runs ₦40,000 to ₦150,000 a year, considerably cheaper than at federal schools in the bigger cities. The lower cost is one reason UNN attracts candidates with tight family budgets from across Nigeria.
At the Enugu Campus (Medicine), the cost is slightly higher. On-campus and nearby off-campus housing runs ₦60,000 to ₦200,000 a year.

Frequently asked questions
Is UNN strict on catchment area?
UNN applies the JAMB-mandated 45-35-20 merit-catchment-ELDS split. Enugu State (where UNN is located) plus the surrounding South-East states (Anambra, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo) fall in the catchment pool. Candidates from these states get an edge on the catchment quota. The merit quota (45%) is open to all candidates nationally and goes to the highest aggregate scores. The ELDS quota (20%) prioritises candidates from the JAMB-designated educationally-less-developed states.
How does UNN compare with UNILAG or UI for the same course?
UNN sits in the same competitive tier for headline courses. Medicine, Law, Pharmacy and Engineering at UNN are admitted at working cut-offs within a few marks of UNILAG, UI, and OAU. The differences are mostly about location and lifestyle. UNN’s Nsukka campus is rural, cool, and largely residential; UNILAG is urban and cosmopolitan. The cost of living at UNN is notably lower. For students aiming at the same degree at a lower total cost, UNN is often the cheaper choice.
Does UNN consider O Level grades for admission?
Yes, both as an eligibility filter and as a tie-breaker. The five-credit minimum is the eligibility cut. Beyond that, UNN’s admission committee uses grade quality (more A1 and B2 grades) to separate candidates on the same Post-UTME aggregate. For competitive courses (Medicine, Law, Pharmacy), strong O Level grades help in the final ranking. A candidate with consistent A1s in core subjects has an advantage over a candidate with mixed C5s and C6s.
How much does first year at UNN cost?
Budget around ₦150,000 to ₦350,000 for the first year. Official school charges (acceptance, levies, ID, exam, library) come to ₦60,000 to ₦250,000. Hostel costs add ₦10,000 to ₦20,000 if you secure on-campus accommodation. Off-campus rent in Nsukka runs ₦40,000 to ₦150,000 a year. Personal expenses (food, transport, books) add ₦25,000 to ₦40,000 a month. The total at UNN is among the lowest at top federal universities because of the lower cost of living in Nsukka.
Is the College of Medicine on the same campus as the main university?
No. The College of Medicine is on the Enugu Campus, about an hour’s drive from the main Nsukka campus. Medicine and Surgery candidates spend their pre-clinical years (100 to 300 level) at Nsukka, then move to Enugu Campus for clinical years (400 to 600 level). Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Medical Laboratory Science follow a similar pattern. Plan accommodation around this split if you are admitted to a health science course.
Can I switch courses within UNN after admission?
UNN allows internal course changes through the Senate-approved process, usually applied for at the end of 100 level. The receiving department must have capacity, and the candidate must meet the entry requirements for the new course. The change is competitive at popular courses (Medicine, Law); most successful internal transfers go to less competitive departments. Discuss with your faculty officer before applying; the process takes a full session to complete.
